The Real Timeline: What Your First 90 Days Selling Digital Products Actually Looks Like
If you’ve been thinking about starting a digital product business, you’ve probably wondered how long it actually takes to go from idea to first sale. Not the highlight reel version. Not the “I made six figures in my first month” story. The real, honest timeline.
I recently broke down the entire journey in a three-part video series on my YouTube channel, and I wanted to expand on it here because this is something I wish someone had shown me when I was starting out. When you’re staring at a blank Canva template or trying to figure out what your niche even is, it helps to know what the path actually looks like.
So let me walk you through what your first 90 days can realistically look like, broken down into three phases.
Days 1-30: The Foundation Phase
The first month isn’t about creating your product yet. I know that feels counterintuitive. You want to jump straight into making something and getting it out there. But the creators who skip this foundation phase are the ones who end up stuck six months later, wondering why nothing is selling.
This is where you get clear on your why. Not just “I want to make money” but the deeper reason you’re doing this. Your why is what keeps you going when you post content that gets three likes or when your first launch doesn’t go the way you hoped. It’s also what makes your brand magnetic, because people connect with purpose.
You’ll also spend time identifying your niche and defining your ideal customer. This is where a lot of people get tripped up because they think they need to appeal to everyone. But the truth is, when you try to speak to everyone, you end up resonating with no one. Getting specific about who you’re serving makes everything else easier, from creating products to writing sales pages to showing up on social media.
During this phase, you can start exploring some of the free tools that will become your best friends as a digital product creator. Canva has a free plan that’s incredibly powerful for designing everything from your logo to your brand colors to mood boards that help you visualize your brand identity. You can also use free tools like Coolors to generate color palettes and Google Fonts to explore typography options. The best part is that you don’t need to be a designer or spend money on expensive software to create a professional-looking brand.
By the end of month one, you should have clarity on your why, your niche, and who you’re creating for. You might also start thinking about your brand identity, the look and feel that’s going to represent your business. This is all covered in the first section of my course, The Passive Income Playbook, because without this foundation, everything else feels like guesswork.
Days 31-60: The Creation Phase
Month two is where things start to feel real. This is when you actually make your product.
But here’s what most people don’t tell you. Creating your first digital product doesn’t have to take weeks. If you’ve done the work in month one, you know exactly what your audience needs, and that makes the creation process so much faster. You’re not second-guessing every slide or every workbook page because you know who it’s for and what problem it solves.
This is where Canva really shines. With the free version, you can create eBooks, workbooks, templates, checklists, planners, and so much more. The drag-and-drop interface makes it accessible even if you’ve never designed anything before. You can use their templates as a starting point and customize them to match your brand, or you can start from scratch if you’re feeling creative.
This is also when you start building the systems that will help you sell. You’ll create your sales page, the place where your product lives and where people can learn more about what you’re offering. You’ll set up your email list if you haven’t already, because that’s going to be one of your most valuable assets as a digital product creator. Platforms like Mailchimp and ConvertKit both offer free plans that are perfect when you’re just starting out.
You might also start thinking about your lead magnet, that free offer that gets people onto your email list in the first place. It could be a checklist, a mini guide, a template, anything that gives value and makes people excited to hear from you.
For hosting and selling your digital products, platforms like The Leap and Stan Store make it incredibly easy to set up a storefront where people can browse and purchase your products. Both platforms are designed specifically for creators and handle everything from payment processing to product delivery. You can literally have your store set up in an afternoon.
By the end of month two, you have a product, a sales page, and the beginnings of a funnel that will turn browsers into buyers.

Days 61-90: The Launch and Momentum Phase
Month three is when you put yourself out there. This is the part that feels scary and exciting at the same time.
You’ll start creating content that leads people to your product. Not salesy, pushy content, but helpful, valuable posts that build trust and show people you understand their struggles. You’ll talk about your product naturally, weaving it into your content in a way that feels authentic.
Tools like CapCut or even Canva’s video editor can help you create engaging social media content without needing fancy equipment or editing software. Both are free and surprisingly powerful for creating reels, shorts, and TikToks that can drive traffic to your products.
You might experiment with paid ads, or you might focus on organic strategies like showing up consistently on social media, sending regular emails, and building relationships. There’s no one right way to do this, and that’s actually freeing. You get to choose the marketing strategies that feel good to you.
This is also when you’ll start seeing what works and what doesn’t. Maybe one type of content performs better than others. Maybe your audience responds more to certain topics. This feedback is gold because it tells you how to refine your approach moving forward.
By day ninety, you’ve made your first sales, or you’re very close. But more importantly, you’ve built something real. You have a product, a brand, a growing audience, and a system that you can repeat and scale.
The Part No One Talks About
Here’s what I want you to know. These 90 days won’t be perfect. There will be days when you feel like you have no idea what you’re doing. There will be moments when you compare yourself to other creators and wonder if you’re behind.
The magic is in showing up anyway. The magic is in trusting the process, even when it feels slow, because at the end of 90 days, you’ll have something that most people only dream about. You’ll have a business.
Here’s the beautiful part. You can start this entire journey without spending hundreds of dollars on tools and software. Between Canva, The Leap or Stan Store, and free email marketing platforms, you have everything you need to create, sell, and deliver digital products. The only investment you really need to make is your time and commitment.
If you want the full day-by-day breakdown, I created a three-part video series on YouTube that walks through every single step. Video one covers days 1 through 30, video two covers days 31 through 60, and video three takes you through days 61 through 90. Each video breaks down exactly what to focus on during that phase, so you’re never wondering what comes next.
If you want even more support, The Passive Income Playbook is my full course that teaches you everything from mindset to product creation to setting up sales funnels. It’s designed to take you from idea to income, with step-by-step lessons and even PLR products to help you get started faster.
Your first 90 days don’t have to be overwhelming. When you have a plan, they can actually be exciting. So if you’re ready to stop wondering and start doing, I’ll be here cheering you on every step of the way.
